Emergency Fund, Malawi

Embangweni Hospital

Malawi is one of the poorest countries on earth, with a GNP per capita of US$170 per year.  One out of 8 Malawian children do not make it to their 5th birthday, due to lack of medical care and money to pay for it.

Through our relationship with Embangweni Hospital, we are sponsoring an Emergency Fund for the neediest patients of this area.

The most common diagnoses are Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Pneumonia, and Miscarriage. Many of their patients arrive in dire circumstances with little money to pay for life-saving treatment. It is with them in mind that we have created this Emergency Fund.

This hospital is part of the Embangweni Mission Station located in the rural Mzimba northern region of Malawi and is operated by the Central African Presbyterian Church. The Hospital is a 130-bed facility serving a catchment area of well over 100,000 people.

In 2001, the hospital and satellite clinicis provided 35,506 inpatient days and 48,100 outpatient visits  with 1,914 children delivered. In the surgical theater, there were over 1,000 major and minor surgical procedures performed. The hospital’s health care services are led by a combination of one to two expatriate doctors and two Malawian clinical officers, as well as a cadre of skilled medical assistants, trained nurses, and additional trained allied workers, who together direct a dedicated hospital and its three health centers’ staffs.
